Can You Lay Artificial Grass on Concrete? (Step-by-Step Guide for Balconies & Patios)

Have a boring concrete patio, balcony, or rooftop deck? You don't need to dig up the concrete to enjoy a lush, green lawn. Yes, you can absolutely install artificial grass directly on top of concrete.

This method is faster, cleaner, and perfect for urban apartments, commercial spaces, and areas where excavation isn't possible. Here is the correct way to do it.

Why Install Turf on Concrete?

No Excavation Needed: Skip the messy process of removing concrete or digging soil.

Instant Drainage: Concrete naturally slopes away from buildings, providing excellent runoff.

Weed-Free: Concrete blocks any underlying weeds.

The 5-Step Installation Process
Step 1: Deep Clean the Concrete

Sweep away all debris. Use a pressure washer or degreaser to remove oil, dirt, and grime. The surface must be completely clean for the adhesive to stick.

Step 2: Optional – Install a Foam Underlay

Concrete is hard! For comfort underfoot (especially for kids playing), roll out a shock pad or foam underlay. This adds cushioning and helps insulate against heat.

Step 3: Apply Adhesive of factory artificial turf

Use a high-quality polyurethane turf adhesive.

Method: Spread the glue evenly over the concrete with a notched trowel, or apply it in a zig-zag pattern along the perimeter.

Step 4: Lay the Turf

Roll the artificial grass over the glued area. Press down firmly. If using multiple rolls, butt the edges together tightly and use seam tape underneath to join them seamlessly.

Step 5: Brush and Finish of artificial grass

Use a stiff broom to brush the grass fibers upright. If desired, sprinkle a light layer of silica sand infill to help weigh the turf down and protect the backing from UV rays.
